Three ways a frame fails, drawn here and measured with the same code

Nothing below is a photograph somebody chose. The frame is drawn by this page, broken in the way the segment names, and — if you press the control — put through the identical worker the button in the rail uses. Two of the three are cases where the answer is no.

Camera shake. Every pixel averaged across nine cells along one axis, which is what a hand-held exposure does.

The case the pass is shaped for. The energy is still in the frame, moved sideways, and a kernel of the measured shape walks most of it back.

These numbers are this processor’s, measured now. What a learned pass would cost to fetch and what it is licensed under are on the weights page.

Check a photo in four steps

  1. Open the photo you are about to upload. A form photo, a signature, a document scan or any picture. Nothing is uploaded; the check runs in this tab.
  2. Read the verdict and the heat map. Sharp, soft or blurred, from the median edge width. The heat map marks each region with hatching and its own edge width, so you can see whether the face or the text is the blurred part.
  3. Choose what it is for. Passport, exam form, signature or document. Type your form's own pixel and KB limits if it has them; the checklist adds them.
  4. Retake, or fix. If the photo is blurred, retaking it is usually the right answer. For passports it is the only one. Otherwise you can open the same photo in the deblur workspace.

Why forms reject blurred photos

Indian application portals treat blur as a rejection reason. SSC notices state that a blurred photograph or a blurred or illegible signature will be rejected. Passport photo guidelines ask for a face in sharp focus and say the photo must not be retouched or enhanced. Aadhaar document uploads ask for a clear, coloured scan of the original. A check before you upload is cheaper than a rejection after.

Passport photoRetake if blurred. Retouching or enhancing is not allowed, so no deblur is offered here.
Exam photoRetake if blurred; a deblurred photo is only a labelled fallback.
SignatureMake sure the ink fills the frame (at least 80% of the width) and is not blurred.
Document scanKeep it in colour and readable; never alter what the document says.

What the check cannot tell you

  • Whether a portal will accept the photo. Every check here is a measurement made on your device, nothing more.
  • Whether the background, face position or expression meet a specification.
  • Pixel and KB limits for a specific exam: those change every cycle, so type the ones printed on your own notice.

If the photo is blurred and retaking it is not possible, the deblur workspace or the one-tap blur-to-clear page can try. Pixelation and mosaic are a different problem — read why.

Questions

How does it decide whether a photo is blurry?

It measures the edge width: how many pixels it takes for the strongest edges in the photo to rise from 10% to 90% of their contrast, read separately for each edge orientation so camera shake in one direction is not hidden by sharp edges in another. Up to 2.5 px on the measured copy reads as sharp, up to 4 px as soft, above that as blurred. It also looks for a block grid left by scaling or heavy compression. The thresholds are provisional and explained on the how-it-works page.

Does a pass here mean my form photo will be accepted?

No. The checklist says what was checked on your device and nothing more. Portals apply their own rules, and some check things this page does not, such as background colour or face position.

My passport photo is blurred. Can I deblur it?

Passport photo guidelines say not to retouch, enhance or soften the photo, and list blurred and out-of-focus photos as unacceptable. Retake it. This page does not offer a deblur for the passport purpose for that reason.

What does the signature check measure?

How much of the image the ink spans. An SSC advisory asks that a signature fill at least 80% of its box, so the check warns when the ink spans less than 80% of the width.

When won't this work?

On very flat images with almost no edges (a plain wall, a clear sky), where no edge width can be read. Heavy JPEG compression can also make a sharp photo read as soft. The check is a measurement, not a judgement of the content.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The photo is decoded and measured in this browser tab and nothing about it is sent anywhere.
